The tale of our now "tail-less" cat

Wow..so much can change in 24 hours time!  I'll start with yesterday....

Makayla had an explosion in her diaper..so I had to give her a bath mid-day.  As I was bathing her, Damon came in.  He had been out mowing the yard.  I had to tell him what happened..etc..then he said to me...

"Well..Thomas has done it again."

What did he do now?...was my reply.  Damon was mowing..and there was some tall grass that was growing through our fence from our neighbors side.  Thomas decided to make him a 'nest' in the overgrowth.  You know how cats are.  Anyways..hearing Damon approaching...Thomas didn't move..and Damon didn't, nor couldn't, see him.

Yeah you know whats coming next wasn't pretty.

Thomas decided at the last minute he'd better bolt.  And that he did..with his tail getting cut by the mower.  When I saw him walking down our driveway after the accident..my hand went to my mouth and I said "oh..my..gosh.....".  Half of his tail was gone.  We dialed the numbers to the nearest vets offices.  One wasn't in and the other wouldn't take us..even though it was an emergency.  But..that was a blessing in disguise because I didn't care for them anyways..never have..never will.  So we got ahold of the vets I do like over in Beckley and they said to come IMMEDIATELY.

Praise God for those people.

We got loaded up..yes..me, Damon, Makayla, and Thomas (and did I mention it was naptime?!) and off to Beckley we went.  They took us straight in and had him ready to go into surgery within 15 minutes.

I went and picked him up today..he did amazing through the surgery and they had to remove what was left of his tail.  It was pretty mangled from what the dr told me yesterday evening.  Two of his teeth also fell out during surgery when they removed some hair that had been wrapped around them (I had told the dr this prior to surgery so they could take a look) and they didn't even charge me for it.

Again..Praise God for those people!

Anyways..to close out a less than pleasing post..Thomas is home, happy, and doing awesome.  He may not be the prettiest of cats (one eye, no tail, and now missing a couple teeth) but he's our boy..our 'tom-tom'..our Thomas.

Our baby.

More Peas, Please link-up!!

Toddlerfoodlink-up

Today I'm going to share with you our adventures in what Makayla eats (and has eaten) on a daily basis.  I'm going to cover things we've done in the past and work my way up to where we are now..I hope you enjoy this and maybe learn something that you can try with your little one!!  I thought it would be a great way for all of us mom's to share, ask questions, and talk about our concerns from a nutritional standpoint and gain some insight from one another!!  Please..link up today and join Callie and I..we'd love to hear what you have to say!!

When Makayla was around 4-5 months old, I started her on baby food.  Some people think that 4 months old is too young..but she seemed ready so I gave it a shot.  I was not expecting the transition to be so hard!!  She took to baby food rather well..it was..well..her diapers that did the transitioning if you know what I mean!!  But..give it time..because if your there right now with your baby..they do eventually get normal again!  But for me..it was scary.  And a bit of advice on this subject..remember your "P's"..peas, pears, peaches, prunes..etc..they are 'go' foods!!  Just so you know..your not alone!

I started out giving her organic baby foods like Ella's Kitchen.  They had fantastic variety and Makayla loved the broccoli, pears, and peas combo they had.  Shortly after she started eating baby food, Christmas was upon us and my sweet hubby bought me a Baby Bullet!  So I started making my own homemade baby food after that and only bought store bought for when we'd be traveling.  I made alot of the combos she liked when I was buying her food and came up with some as well (which included alot of blueberries!).  The one go to website that helped me the most when I started out on my homemade baby food adventure was Wholesome Homemade Baby Food.  I actually still visit their website from time to time to get more advice on toddler foods, recipes, and look up nutritional values on fruits and veggies to make sure she's getting what she needs!

Of course, now we are in full on feeding herself mode.  She eats mostly what we eat unless its something I know she won't touch.  Which leads me to my first question for all you mom's out there...

How do you get your toddler to try something new?

Makayla is pretty good about trying new foods..but not always.  And most of the time I feel like more gets left on the floor or her plate than what goes into her mouth.  That's frustrating sometimes because when she was eating baby food she ate like a total pro.  She still prefers fruits over veggies though I feel like she's trying a little better on that part.  As far as eating meats go, we're still working on that.  I feel like all she eats are chicken nuggets.  She will try meats (sometimes)..but there are some days that I won't get any into her.  That's when I discovered something that makes me feel a little better on those days when we struggle with protein intake.

I'll give her a bottle of one of Main Street Cafe's protein smoothies on the days when we're not doing so great, eating wise.  I know its not as good as getting 'real' protein into her..but its better than none the way I look at it!

So..I thought y'all might want to take a look at some things Makayla will eat (and not!) on a daily basis now that she's 16 months old.  Maybe it'll give you a chance to rediscover some foods you've maybe not thought of or try some new things with your toddler/baby!

  • Breakfast usually consists of some type of cereal (right now we're eating Good MOREnings berry loops) and diced fruit (kiwi (her favorite!), strawberries, pears, peaches, bananas)
  • Snack like goldfish or something in that line
  • Dinner would be a chicken nugget or peanut butter and jelly sandwich (if I can't get her to eat whatever we are having) and a fruit and veggie.
  • Another snack before bed
Now..for the really interesting part!  Here is a list of things Makayla enjoys eating....

  • black eyed peas
  • green beans
  • pinto beans or refried beans (pretty much the same thing only one is mashed up)
  • guacamole
  • any type of fruit
  • corn meal mush (its an Amish/southern food..but you can make your own!)
  • tator tots
  • chicken nuggets
  • and the not-so-good-for-you potato chips..though she does eat veggie straws 95% of the time she's eating chips

Some things she won't touch are...

  • 'Gooey' things..she's a total girly-girl and doesn't like her hands to get all yucky!  I'm hoping this changes!
  • Spaghetti..also something I'm hoping changes!  She did try a little a couple weeks ago..so that was a step in the right direction!

I thought you may also like to know what my little one is drinking in her sippy cup now at 16 months of age as well!  She is still breastfeeding in the morning when she first gets up (Yay me!  I never thought I could go a year..let alone several months past that 12 month mark!) but this I know won't last much longer.  And that's ok by me..whenever she'd done with it..she'll be done.  Of course I'll probably be in a blue mood for a few days following..but that's another story for another time!  She drinks ALOT of whole milk.  But the kicker is its gotta be strawberry.  Nesquick has been a huge help in this department!  She never was real crazy about drinking plain white milk..I think she thought it should of tasted like breast milk and when it didn't she didn't want anything to do with it.  So we make it strawberry for her...but that's ok..at least she's drinking her milk!!  Also right now she's loving V8 Splashers juice in the cherry pomegranate blend.  She normally drinks milk in the morning/early afternoon before naptime..and juice in the evening.  But its never the same each and every day (as most of you moms out there know!).

All in all we're doing 'ok' with the eating thing.  Some days (and weeks) are better than others..but I feel like we struggle more now than we ever have.  I'd LOVE to hear your comments, suggestions, menu ideas, and anything in between to help us out a bit and get some more creative ideas that maybe just aren't coming to mind right now!  Please be sure to link up and share with us in your own post how your eating adventures are going with your little (or not so little) one at the moment!  After all..we love to hear them say...

Apples and such

So Damon and I just finished peeling, coring, and slicing a bushel of apples he picked while at Morgan's Orchard (here in WV) a couple days ago.  Sorry I don't have any pictures..they were some purdy apples though let me tell you!  We put up a few quart bags of them in the freezer for later use in pies and all other sorts of yummies I'm sure to find recipes for.  We left a dozen apples for snacking and whatever we might want in the next couple of days.  Not sure of the variety..he's been trying to pronounce what he 'thinks' the guy at the orchard place told him they were but *ahem*..not quite believing him cause well..I've never heard of it before!  Plus he can't even pronouce it anyways!

Oh well..at least they are good!!

I'm thinking of making some blueberry applesauce out of some.  Anyone ever made their own homemade applesauce before?  I've made just about everything else..apple butter, apple jelly, and every baked good under the sun..except applesauce.

Go figure.

But..its not a hard process (already googled some recipes) and I'm darned set on making some in blueberry flavored form for you..can..guess..who...

Hopefully she'll eat it!  Anyways..speaking of food..don't forget next tuesday (Oct. 2nd) is when Callie and I are hosting the "More Peas, Please!" link up so be thinking of your food situations with your little one..whether they are eating up a storm and asking for more or puckering their lips so tight you can't get them to try one bite!  We'd LOVE for you to link up and share your ideas, tips, tricks, or anything else you have in mind!!

A Miscellany Mommy Kinda Day!

miscellany monday at lowercase letters

  • Our church homecoming was held yesterday and we had a blast as usual!  My picture was snapped once (or twice!) by our own church paparazzi (aka the pastor's wife!).  Here is one I chose to share with y'all..though I feel it is a VERY unflattering picture of myself!  I'm only sharing cause my baby girl was just too cute yesterday in her sunday best!

  • A day in the life of a very mobile baby/toddler can wear a momma out!!  Especially when you have several rooms that look like this...

  • Any tips on teaching a toddler to pick up after themselves?  And what is a good age to start?  She does some stuff on her own (sometimes)..but she's not really able to understand the whole concept of 'picking up after yourself' yet.

  • We've officially figured out what Miss Makayla will be for Halloween this year!  It was a toss up between a kitty cat and a hoot owl..but in the end the kitty won out simply because she's soooo obsessed with kitties (and has been since she was WEE little!).  I found DIY outfits on pinterest for both beforehand..so after we made the decision I picked up some tulle and a black feather boa to recreate our own version!  I can't wait to see how it turns out!

  • Speaking of pinterest (I know..don't you just love that site?!)..I'm also currently working on a project with a cozy coupe.  We were able to score one for FREE and I'm in the process of recreating it to look something like this....

......oh I cannot WAIT to see how it turns out!!!!!!!!!

Something to be thinking about...

Anymore, I have such a hard time figuring out what Makayla will eat.  Most of the time I have more left over from her meals than what actually went into her little tummy.

Such a bummer since she was such a good 'babyfood' eater.

I got to thinking a while back..wouldn't it be great if we could all do a post on what we feed our kids??  Do a link up and then we could all get ideas from fellow bloggers on meal plans and snack ideas for our babies and toddlers.  Sound like a good idea?

Good..I was hoping you'd say "Yes"!

I'm teaming up with Callie over at Through Clouded Glass in early October (the 2nd..to be more precise!) to do a link up for just this subject!

We're calling it "More Peas, Please!"!

Toddlerfoodlink-up

We are looking for all you bloggers to share your meal plans for your kids with us in a post.  Whether your a new mom and are contemplating making your baby homemade baby food or are a mom of a toddler and have a picky eater and need some new insight.  Maybe you've got a great little eater on your hands..let us know your secrets!!  Give us your thoughts on the subject!  If you need inspiration..reach out and ask!!  Many who have 'been there done that' would be most happy to share their secrets (and failures!).   No matter where you are in your eating adventure with your little one..we'd love to hear what you have to say about the subject!!

We look forward to reading what you have to say and finding some new ideas on what to feed our little ones!

miscellany on a rainy monday

Linking up miscellany monday at lowercase letters  &
Mommy Moments Blog Hop

  • I LOVE watching my girl grow!

  • I've been working on a couple small projects.  First one is hard to show in pictures..but trust me..it looks sooo pretty!!  I painted Makayla's closet door the same color I painted her dresser (dark brown) and GLITTERIZED it!  I just blew some iridescent glitter onto the paint while it was wet and coated with some poly when it was all dry to give it a nice shine!  I love the way it turned out!  I still have to paint the hardware on the door knob.  The glass knob is new but we had to use some parts off of the old knob to make it work.  Confusing..I know.  But my only thing now is I know the trim would make everything look so much better if I painted it too but oh...my...gosh.  I SO don't want to get into a project of that magnitude!   Anyways..whaddya think?

you can't really see the glitteriness in this pic...

better in this one..but lots of glare from the camera flash..like I said..hard to show in pictures!  :-/

  • We were at the Tamarack last week over in Beckley for a job fair they were holding and Makayla spotted these cute, homemade owls!!  Well..I said thats good..mommy can make them WAY cheaper than the $27 price tag that the big ones had on them!  Mine turned out rather well!  I only spent around $9 on material and I can still make many, many more!

  • I've still been baking.  ALOT.  Its been a good stress reliever for me lately.  Not so good for my waistline.  :-(  I've made homemade oreos, peanut butter cup smores bars, pumpkin cinnamon roll sheet cake, and no bake cookies in the past probably 2 weeks.  I know..thats ALOT!  Its always fun to experiment with new recipes though, right?!
  • I want to de-clutter my house in the worst way right now.  I just got done cleaning (dusting, sweeping, mopping) so I feel 'some' better.  But I still have alot of clutter that needs cleared up.
  • I also need to finish my fall decorating!  I have some up but not all of it.  I'll do a post on that once its complete.
  • I cleaned our church parsonage last week and found they had a huge leak in the roof and some of the ceiling had collapsed in one of the bedrooms.  I hated to break the news to the church members..but at least now they can get things fixed before it gets any worse.  I guess it was a blessing in disguise!
  • Speaking of blessings..I've been able to witness to someone near and dear to me here lately.  Its been going really well too!!  Pray for me that God will use me and give me the right words to say to this person.  Ultimately..I'm hoping this person accepts Jesus into his/her heart no matter who witnesses to them.
And we'll end on that happy note!
