Campfire fun!

After having such a memorable cookout with our Amish friends last week on vacation..it got me to thinking how differently people from different areas go about having a cookout/hot dog roast/campfire..as in..what they like to prepare.  Our Amish friends liked to roast marshmellows (and they had those large enormous ones!!) and sandwich them between graham crackers smeared with peanut butter!  Something I had actually never thought about before!  I think next time I'm doing smores..I'm gonna smear some peanut butter on my graham crackers since I'm such a chocolate/peanut butter fan!!  It was definately a yummy treat!  And for the hot dogs?  Mary (the amish lady) brought out fixins' of homemade sliced bread, mustard, and homemade canned 'sandwich spread', which is like a relish.  Not your run of-the-mill traditions..at least not in my neck of the woods!!  But everything was AMAZING and I now plan on canning some sandwich spread in the near future!

Here in WV..we do the basic smores as everyone knows about and for hot dogs..well we're abit different when it comes to that!  A "WV hot dog" would have to have chili and slaw on it!  Not that when we're doing a weenie roast we fix them up like that.  Mostly just eat them right off the fire.  I know hot dogs are such a big deal with toppings depending on where your from.  I've read in chicago or somewhere they actually put a dill pickle spear beside the hot dog in the bun!  Something I had NEVER heard of!  It just fasicnates me how different regions do things differently!

But anyways..back to my post.  I was reading an article in one of my older Rachael Ray magazines on savory spins on campfire fares.  A couple that were quite intriguing was roasting a mozzerella ball (like you would a marshmellow) over the fire..then sandwiching it between wheat crackers spread with an olive tapenade (sounds like something Kristin would enjoy!)!  Another was grilling dessert burritos.  I'm guessing you take a flour tortilla and fill it with chocolate chips and mini marshmellows and wrap it up in aluminum foil and grill over a flame.  Yummy!  And one for adults..take a date wrapped with some prosciutto and thread it onto a skewer..grilling over the flame.  Definately something different!  How about wrapping up a peeled, cored apple with brown sugar and butter..and cooking until tender?  Great for the fall season that is upon us..wouldn't you say?!  This has definately got my wheels turning for new takes on campfire fare!

So is there anything you make on a campfire thats just so delish or unique you'd like to share?  I'd love to hear your comments, as always!

  2. You've got my mouth watering now :-). Roasted mozzarella balls? YUM! My favorite thing to have on hot dogs (Honee Weenees only please) are: mayo and Harry and Davids Sweet Onion Relish. You just can't beat it! On s'mores we love peanut butter and banana slices in addition to the marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers. A coconut marshmallow? All the better!
